EFC Family Conference

Eastside FC’s Annual Family Gathering

Sunday, June 5, from 4:00p - 7:00p. Mercer Island Community Center. The address is 8236 SE 24th St, Mercer Island, WA 98040

This year’s event is formatted a little differently than in years past. We’re using the model of a industry conference wherein there are different topic seminars....

As always, we’ll celebrate this year’s championships and introduce new coaches.

Here’s an overview of the seminars we’ll be offering. Please see the attached schedule.

A Mastery Approach to Parenting in Sports. Dr. Frank Smoll, the leading researcher in empirical studies focused on the most effective communication strategies for coaches and parents of competitive young athletes. Learn how you as a parent can foster successful athletes and “get on the same page” with your coach to the benefit of the athlete. The primary focus is on providing a mastery motivational climate that emphasizes a definition of success as self-improvement, maximum effort, and enjoying the intrinsic process of achieving sports mastery. A major theme is emphasized: What young athletes learn in sports carries over into their everyday lives. The program also discusses the most successful parent behavior as it relates to the young athlete as well as relations with coaches.

Best Practices for Team Managers. Renee Prendergast, an experienced and successful team manager at Eastside FC. Are you a team manager? Want to be effective? Enjoy the experience? Work well with your coach and the team? This track is for you. Renee Prendergast leads a discussion of best practices, pitfalls to avoid, and overall how to be the most effective team manager possible. Renee and other managers and staff in the club have compiled a team manager’s manual that serves as a roadmap for successful team managers.

Best Practices for Team Treasurers. Jeff Sullivan, Treasurer of Eastside FC. Jeff leads this track focused on effective management of team budgets and checking accounts. He’ll cover coaching expense reimbursement policy, collections,

Team Fundraising. Eastside FC Girls 93 Red Team. The parents and players from the G93R team have been phenomenally successful at raising funds for team travel. Learn about the mechanisms they used to become the most effective fundraising team in the club.

Navigating the Youth Soccer Landscape. Mike Racine, Executive Director of Eastside FC. Have you ever wondered how the world of soccer and particularly how youth soccer fits together? Want to know the difference between US Youth Soccer and US Club Soccer? Ever heard of CONCACAF? FIFA? USYS? UEFA? La Liga? CONMEBOL? USSF? AYSO? English Premier League? There are more acronyms in soccer than the US military. Come and get a landscape overview of the world of soccer starting with FIFA, the world sanctioning body. In particular, we’ll drive down into the world of youth soccer in the US and Washington state.

Effective Team Communications Using Korrio. Korrio Staff. This topic will introduce Korrio as a communication/notification/team support platform. Learn the key things you should do as a coach, team manager, parent, or player to stay in the loop with regard to the team schedule, any urgent notifications and late-breaking schedule changes.

Preparing for the College Scholarship Process – A Panel Discussion. Led by Coach Frank Gallo with a supporting cast of Coach Dan Strom and G93R team parents & players who successfully secured college soccer scholarships. Every year, Eastside FC graduates a significant number of players who go on to collegiate soccer careers on scholarship.  Get an overview of the process involved in reaching out to colleges for scholarship support and the keys to success.

Referee in Pool Program. Ken Robertson, Commissioner of the East King County Referee Association and EFC’s referee coordinator. Ken describes the club’s referee-in-pool program and how you can become a referee. Focused on ages 13 thru adult, this track focuses on how the program works and how to become a referee. You can learn how to earn $XXX dollars for your team by serving as a ref-in-pool. If you’re a parent or athlete aged 13 or over, learn how to get started as a referee and earn money officiatingat games – it’s a great summer job and there’s a shortage of qualified referees. This is a great opportunity to earn $$, learn the Laws of the Game, and support the soccer community in a critically important role.

Sounders FC Academy Program Overview. Head Coach Dick McCormick of the Sounders FC Academy. Coach McCormick provides an overview of the Sounders FC Academy. This year, Eastside FC advanced 5 young men into this program that serves as an entry point to the national teams and professional ranks. Learn what the program is all about and what Sounders FC Academy is looking for.

Wall Workout Demonstrations. Coach Tom Bialek. If there is one thing a soccer athlete should do to develop a fine first touch, it’s practice against a wall. Coach Tom Bialek will demonstrate a series of wall workouts to improve your touch on the ball. Do these workouts consistently and you WILL improve your first touch - significantly.
Eurosport/adidas & Team Tables. Our uniform fulfilment vendor Eurosport and our uniform manufacturer adidas will have a table. There are a limited number of tables available for teams to sell fundraising items. Contact Rich Nardi, rich@nardi.net if interested.

Save the date!!

Keep It Positive

Coach Ryan Dortch noticed this blog post on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) website and forwarded it.  Kudos to the Mount Laurel United Soccer Association for the original authorship.  Thought it was worth re-printing here...

============

The following is a list of points of emphasis from a handout given to parents with children in the Mount Laurel (N.J.) United Soccer Association. This handout is designed to minimize and eliminate sideline coaching from parents. We hope that you can adapt some or all of these guidelines in this form or another to your coaching situation.

1. Be positive. Be supportive. Cheer for the team. Encourage all of the players. Keep negative comments to yourself, especially those directed at another parent’s child. Remember that the players are doing the best that they can and that playing good soccer is more difficult than it looks.

2. Do not coach. Let the coaches make adjustments as they see the need. Many times the instruction from a spectator is exactly the opposite of the instruction given by the coach. Allow the players the freedom to make their own decisions and learn from their mistakes. Spectator statements like “Stay Wide,” Clear It,” “Pass The Ball,” “Get Rid of It,” “Move Up,” “Move Back,” etc., tend to undermine the need for players to communicate with each other.

3. Never address players on the other team, except to encourage.

4. Treat the officials with respect. All officials make mistakes. All humans make mistakes. Let the officials be human. Let the coaches approach the officials if they feel the need. The referee may be wrong, but not as often as you are? Have you ever seen a referee change his mind because a parent shouted at him or her?

5. Do not engage is game-related discussions with parents from the opposing team. We will be playing these teams for many years to come. We want to be known in the soccer community as an organization that has class whether we win, lose or draw. The game score will not be remembered. The argument or inappropriate remarks will be.

6. Leave the game on the field. When the game is over, no amount of comment, question or discussion with the players, officials or coaches can change the outcome. Regardless of the outcome, the coaches will evaluate the performance, reinforce the good things and work to correct the things needing improvement.

7. Keep the game fun. Winning is more fun than losing, but each player shuld enjoy playing because they love the game. Avoid offering bribes or “pumping up” your child. Allow them to become self-motivated. Make sure that you take time to enjoy the game yourself. I have heard comments from some of the team that they dread it when their parents start shouting at the referee. It is noticeable that when some parents get more and more agitated, their child gets more and more withdrawn during the game.

Think about your own job. If you have someone who you knew was going to shout at you every time you made a mistake, wouldn’t you stop putting yourself in the position to make thie mistake? That is what happens with some of the players on the team. they would rather not have the ball than risk having it and making a mistake!

Headers for Haiti

Megan Wade With a SUV full of gear for Haiti

Sister Ann delivers the goods

Megan Wade, goalkeeper for Porter Lombard’s Girls 93 team had a life changing experience when she was 10. She was able to spend 3 weeks in Tanzania Africa where she met her pen pal at a school and was able to play soccer with the kids. Already a soccer player, she realized while playing with these kids how soccer is a universal language and the beauty of the game is that all you need is a ball. She played on a dirt field with no nets and a ball that had seen better days yet she played and communicated with kids on a level that may not have happened had it not been for soccer.

Last summer a family friend returned from a trip to Haiti where he spent 2 weeks providing medical care. As he told Megan about his trip he mentioned there was a pretty shabby soccer field across the street from the medical center he worked at. When he announced that he was returning to Haiti to provide more medical help, Megan asked if she could send soccer gear for the kids around the hospital. This started her project “Headers for Haiti”.

Megan organized her high school team (Wenatchee High School – Megan and Sara Silva commute from Wenatchee to play for EFC) to begin collecting gear during the 2010 high school season. In addition she asked businesses for support and 3 businesses said they would donate $50 for every header scored during the season. Megan’s end result was 100lbs of gear including 91 new balls with pumps and $150. Sara Silva, also an EFC teammate scored the only header for the year.

“The cool thing about this project is that our friend is sending me pictures from Haiti showing the kids with the gear we collected” says Megan. She is thinking about continuing the Headers charity this fall and asking businesses for donations for any header scored to continue helping the kids in Haiti.

Well done Megan and Sara!

EFC G96B and Swedish Hospital Team Up for Mobile Mammography

BOTTOM ROW: GENEVA E, MEGAN B, RHIANNON H, CAITLIN L, MARIAH O, DARLENE FANUS, RYAN R, BIANCA L, MEREDITH T & JOCELYN B

I love it when I get reports like this one from Michelle Riley, manager of the Girls 96 Blue team....   Congratulations, girls.  Well done!!

=============

As most of you may remember, in the fall, the team pulled together over the course of a weekend to put together a fundraising effort in honor of Coach Kim and her late sister, Lisa. As a result of their week long effort of selling baked goods, pink ribbon tattoos, friendship bracelets and shoelaces, the team raised over $700 with another couple hundred dollars in company matching funds! They decided to donate the money towards the Swedish Mobile Mammography Program

Last night before practice, Coach Kim and the team presented the check to Darlene Fanus, the Director of the Swedish Mobile Mammography Program. Not only did Darlene come in person to receive the check, she brought along one of the Breast Care Express Digital Mammography Clinics.

Yep, you read it correctly - the 18-wheeler rolled into Preston, driven by Steve (the father of a long time Seattle club soccer playing college aged daughter) just before 6:00pm. The team had a chance to go into the clinic, see the digital mammography technology, hear from Darlene why the program exists (one particularly memorable anecdote: the woman in Neah Bay area who requested a visit because her husband wouldn’t drive her to a medical facility to have a mammogram!), and most importantly, how early detection of breast cancer can help make it a survivable disease.

Darlene also brought the team some swag in the form of a cool water bottles, cupcakes (oh yes-their eyes lit up when they saw those!) and bottled Athena water. Oh - and if the team wants to plan on something for next October, with enough advanced notice, Darlene and Steve can come out to Preston to help with further fundraising efforts! You can see Darlene talk about the program here:

Personally, it was nice to see the girls recognized for their efforts and to hear that what they did makes a difference. Before the team came to the clinic, Darlene told me that when Kim called her, it was a call out of the blue and one they don’t get often and she just had to meet the team. Prior to leaving, she further told Coach Kim that this type of donation means quite a lot because it comes from the heart and wasn’t part of a large corporate campaign or a wealthy family making a large in the family name donation.

Quite frankly, Coach Kim and our girls ROCK!!

Costa Rican Adventure

Rachel Wheeler in Costa Rica

Here's a trip report from Rachel Wheeler (G95R).  She recently travelled to Costa Rica with the US Youth Soccer Region IV Girls 96 ODP team.

===========

The experience I had in Costa Rica was wonderful! It was an incredible opportunity to play four matches against the women's professional teams from Costa Rica: Arenal, Heredia, UCEM, and Flores. We tied our first game 1 – 1, and because of international soccer rules, I only got to play 35 minutes and had to come out due to a bloody nose.

In the second game we lost 2-1, and I was honored to be chosen as the MVP of the match by the Costa Rican team. The next day we enjoyed zip lining through the tropical rainforest and relaxing on the beautiful white sand beaches.

The following day our Region IV team competed against UCEM that had six team members on the Costa Rican Women’s National Team! Our game ended in a 0-0 tie, making us the only team that didn't suffer a loss. Then, we ended our trip strongly with a 5-1 victory over Flores.

A definite highlight of the trip was later that day, when our team took gifts to a daycare for struggling, single women’s children and got to spend time playing and kicking the soccer ball around with them. I hope to go back to Costa Rica with my family someday and visit the center again. I am so very thankful to play for an amazing club like EFC, and that soccer has allowed me to have had this life experience and compete at the international level!

I have also attached a photo from the trip!

Sincerely,

Rachel Wheeler

Swedish Medical Center Looking for Children’s or Young Adults’ Artwork to Feature in New Issaquah Campus

Kids:  Send Us Your Masterpieces !

To meet the health-care needs of the fast growing community of Greater Issaquah/Sammamish, Swedish is building a new medical center in the Issaquah Highlands. The new campus is being developed in two stages. The first stage is the opening of a medical office building and outpatient center in July 2011. Stage two is the hospital, which opens in November 2011.

In an effort to be an engaged community partner and improve the healing environment of our new facility, we would like to feature digital images of artwork or photos by children or young adults who live on the Eastside (open to children and young adults ages 5 to 18). The digital images selected will be turned into long-lasting pieces of art to showcase in the new Swedish facility.

"Art plays an important role in creating a positive, welcoming and healing environment," says Janette Turner, a member of Swedish's Art Committee. "When deciding on what works of art to display in the new Swedish Medical Center/Issaquah, we knew we wanted to feature local artwork. And, what better pieces to include in the facility than works by children who live the in area.”

“Art or photos by children can often be the most healing and touching pieces, as they truly come from the heart and are often shaped by their own experiences. We look forward to showcasing works by these young members of the community.”

Digital images of artwork must be submitted for consideration by 11:59 p.m. on April 11. The artwork and an accompanying release form must be emailed to swedishartissaquah@gmail.com. For complete details and conditions, and to download a release form, please visit www.swedish.org/issaquahart. All submissions must comply with these rules:

Submission rules, terms and conditions

1. Please submit high-resolution (minimum 3200 pixels along the longest edge) digital images or scans of children’s art, or their digital photos, in a TIF or low-compressed JPG format. Images larger than 3200 pixels across are preferred.

2. The artwork and images should promote healing, health and community. Submissions should be original and colorful works of art that celebrate joy, nature and comfort.

3. Entries that are submitted will belong to Swedish, although if the submission is a digital image of a child’s artwork, then the original art piece may be retained by the artist; chosen entries may be collaged together, as space and design permits.

4. All submissions must be emailed to swedishartissaquah@gmail.com by 11:59 p.m. PST on April 11. Please include the child or young adult's full name in the email.

5. All submissions must be accompanied by a release signed by a parent or guardian, which must be emailed to swedishartissaquah@gmail.com by 11:59 p.m. PST on April 11.

6. While this is not a formal contest, space limits the number of images that will be selected.

We welcome all entrants and their families to the grand opening celebration on Saturday, July 9 that will include recognizing the winners and their resulting art pieces. More information about the opening events will come soon.

For more information or questions, please email Brooke Kempner at swedishartissaquah@gmail.com.

Eastside FC in Ethiopia

Giuliana Sercu, a player on Coach Turner's GU13W team, recently made a trip to Ethiopia.  With the help of her team and the Passback program operated jointly by US Soccer Foundation and Eurosport, she was able to deliver a little soccer joy to some deserving kids.

Well done, Giuliana and team!

Here's the report she sent to me and Steve Fear, the Passback program manager at Eurosport......

=================

Dear Mr. Racine and Mr. Fear,

I just wanted to thank you for helping me reach my goal of delivering 30 soccer balls and 5 pumps to kids in Ethiopia.  Thanks to my U-13 soccer team and to EuroSport I brought over 60 soccer balls with me to Ethiopia. We delivered balls to 3 different schools and 1 village. All of the kids and adults were overjoyed!

The schools did not have any soccer balls before we came, and now they have lots! I attached some pictures of me delivering soccer balls in Ethiopia. Once again, thanks so much for your support!

Sincerely,

Giuliana Sercu

Farewell to a Great Team

Time flies...

On Sunday, February 6, Coach Mark Kovats and the boys (now men) of Eastside FC 92 Red (BU18R) played their last game at Eastside FC during the state Cup quarterfinals.  It was the culmination of many years and adventures spent together.  This team is somewhat “historic” as it was the last EFC team to start out as “blue” and “navy” and the last team year to play in the old WYS Premier Division 1 rather than PDL or RCL – maybe even the last age group to go to LPT’s.

Coach Kovats reflected on the team...  "After coaching these young men for the last year and a half, we've come a long way and turned into a very competitive team.  We faced tough competition along the way and they never backed down from anyone.  They will do well."

Gentlemen we wish you well and the very best and brightest of futures.  Thank you and your parents for all the effort and commitment expended over the years.

Eastside Girls Get a Gold Star from the Issaquah Press

Coach Dan Bubar's G97B team

Below is a recent article from the Issaquah Press about our G97B girls team.  Nice job ladies!

"The girls playing for the Eastside Premier Soccer Club joined forces for a Halloween food drive, challenging their rival teams to see who had the most giving spirit. Coach Dan Bubar’s G’97 Blue girls team won the challenge for the second year in a row. Coach Tom Turner’s G’97 White team took second place.

Hopelink has reported it is serving 14 percent more people this year, equating to 18,383 individuals who need a helping hand. The Eastside FC teams collected and donated more than 1,400 pounds of food to local area food banks after their drives.

“It was great to see our soccer club rally together for a good cause. There’s a feeling here of commitment to one another and to the community,” Blue Team manager Susan McGinnis said.

The Blue team girls include Coach Bubar, Riley Dean, Jessica Freeman, Kelsey Yin, Anna McGinnis, Kendall Zack, Hanna Lund, Meredith Troy, Taylor Martinez, Abby Olson, Brianna Gergen, Jenna Weber, Joselyn Heffron and Pawehi Cloutier."

Washington Youth Soccer's Partnership with the Sounders FC

I had the opportunity to talk with Terry Fisher about Washington Youth Soccer's relationship with Sounders FC.  I learned a few things that I didn't know before, and thought I would pass them along to you.  This relationship is a model for Major League Soccer's integration with the youth system. It is a work in progress and continues to evolve for the benefit of youth soccer in Washington State.

Did you know....

Washington Youth Soccer receives 1.25% of the gross gate receipts from most international games that are played here as a result of Sounders. Last year, the Celtic, Barcelona, Manchester United matches produced nearly $100,000 in revenue for Washington Youth Soccer.  These funds contribute to the operating programs in benefit for all levels of soccer in the state.

Washington Youth Soccer is one of five community charity partners that last year received a check for $20,000 from Sounders.  These funds are focused on WYS's TOP Soccer program which provides soccer opportunities for disabled youth.

Washington Youth Soccer created three commercials that utilized Sounder broadcasts as a platform for youth soccer outreach on their televised matches over the past two years.

Washington Youth Soccer occasionally has the opportunity to sell Sounders tickets on its web site, raising incremental operating funds for all programs.

Washington Youth Soccer created Regional Training Centers for 700 athletes to be trained and evaluated with a 50% of cost contribution from Sounders, allowing improved selection of Washington's regional and national competition teams.

Washington Youth Soccer ODP teams proudly wear Sounders FC match kit at regional competitions.

Washington Youth Soccer has exposure to marketing opportunities at multiple levels on an on-going basis that have income potential.

Washington Youth Soccer has complete access to Sounders coaching staff and players at times during the year for added value.
