Costa Rican Adventure

Rachel Wheeler in Costa Rica

Here's a trip report from Rachel Wheeler (G95R).  She recently travelled to Costa Rica with the US Youth Soccer Region IV Girls 96 ODP team.

===========

The experience I had in Costa Rica was wonderful! It was an incredible opportunity to play four matches against the women's professional teams from Costa Rica: Arenal, Heredia, UCEM, and Flores. We tied our first game 1 – 1, and because of international soccer rules, I only got to play 35 minutes and had to come out due to a bloody nose.

In the second game we lost 2-1, and I was honored to be chosen as the MVP of the match by the Costa Rican team. The next day we enjoyed zip lining through the tropical rainforest and relaxing on the beautiful white sand beaches.

The following day our Region IV team competed against UCEM that had six team members on the Costa Rican Women’s National Team! Our game ended in a 0-0 tie, making us the only team that didn't suffer a loss. Then, we ended our trip strongly with a 5-1 victory over Flores.

A definite highlight of the trip was later that day, when our team took gifts to a daycare for struggling, single women’s children and got to spend time playing and kicking the soccer ball around with them. I hope to go back to Costa Rica with my family someday and visit the center again. I am so very thankful to play for an amazing club like EFC, and that soccer has allowed me to have had this life experience and compete at the international level!

I have also attached a photo from the trip!

Sincerely,

Rachel Wheeler
