Rob Savette Nominated for Golden Scarf

Rob Savette – an Eastside FC dad - has been nominated for a Sounders FC Golden Scarf.   Rob was nominated because of his passion for soccer, a passion that drove him to become a season ticket holder in the inaugural year of the MLS (1995) and travel 5000 miles round trip to see games.  Rob was a licensed coach for many years and both his sons have played and coached for Eastside FC.  His youngest son Kyle is 17 and plays for Mark Kovats U18 team and has been with the team since he was 9 years old. His oldest son Jake played for Eastside FC and is currently an assistant coach with Michael Smith. In addition Rob’s wife Gerry started playing the game after she turned 50 and started an all-rookie over-50 womans team! G93R Team Makes Top Ten Nationally

Here's something to celebrate!  EFC's G93R team has climbed into the top 10 nationally after a great weekend in Vegas. This is a huge accomplishment for the team, Head Coach Dan Strom, and Asst. Coach Frank Gallo.

They attended the Las Vegas College Showcase where they played 4 games. First game was against the IL state champ where they won 3-2. Frank said “Going down a goal 5 min's into the Region 2 Champs from Chicago, & absolutely spanking them in the 2nd half to come from behind was a dramatic performance! One of the best games in my 30 yrs....”

Second game, was against the Region I Champion, and we played a tough game but lost 0-1 despite out-shooting our opponents!

Third game was aginst the 2nd ranked team in NJ where we won 1-0.

Last game was against the Georgia State Champ and we won 3-1.
It was a great weekend – here is part of an email from Coach Strom:

"Your daughters played so well and showcased their ability before over 100 college coaches throughout the weekend and did so with a limited roster due to injuries to three regular roster players and a last minute scratch of a guest player.  What's more, the third game was played in gusty wind conditions and the fourth game featured a strong steady wind that impacted the quality of play for both teams. That the team won the top showcase division with a 3-1 record was a solid accomplishment and not only built the team profile but will also draw attention from college coaches in the future."

Well done all!

Andrew Boyd Stepping Down As Club Referee Rep

Andrew Boyd has an eye for soccer.

Andrew Boyd has been Eastside FC's referee representative for the last 6 years.  He's finally stepping down and we'd like to thank him for such a great contribution.

Here's a little bit about the job he has so ably done for the club.  It involves being the liaison between the referee community and the club. The primary duties of the role are:

1. Assist the registrar in loading games to the referee website to facilitate getting quality refs assigned to EFC matches.

2. Maintain the "Teams Table" on the referee site.

3. Manage the Referee in Pool program, and ensure that each team has a representative for their team.

4. Coordinate with the EFC Treasurer regarding which teams have met their Referee in Pool commitment
5. Work with EFC Leadership and EKCSRA leadership when game protests, red cards, or other significant issues happen that need attention.

7. Public speaking at the EFC orientation nights recruiting parents and older players to become a referee.

8. Represent EFC on the EYSA Referee Committee.

9. Organize Referee training classes for new referees.

Andrew is also the State Treasurer for the Washington State Referee Committee, which serves Washington State Youth Soccer (all youth matches in Washington), and Washington State Soccer Association (all amature USSF adult matches in Washington). As Treasurer, he coordinates all the payments for the organization, and serve the 5,000 referees in Washington as one of the 6 voting members of the committee leadership team. Andrew will be concentrating his efforts on the committee agenda in the future.

Thanks, Andrew!!

Sleep Deprivation in Teens: A Common Problem

Here's the first in a series of articles related to health and fitness, courtesy of our partners at Swedish Hospital who are celebrating their 100th year in the community.

Sleep is a very important component of health and performance on the field.  If you don't sleep well, you won't recover well from training and the result of all your hard work will be sub-optimal.  And for game days, well, we know for sure that the best-rested, best-hydrated team on the field will have a distinct advantage.  So get your rest and drink your water to maximize your chance of winning!

============

Teens on average need about 9 to 9.5 hours of sleep at night. But most don’t get the amount of sleep they need. School, friends, homework, activities, television, and the computer may all have a higher priority for a teen than sleep. Sleep deprivation can have serious consequences for a teen’s health and well-being. Here’s how to better understand your child’s sleep needs and what you can do to help.

A Teen’s Natural Sleep Rhythms

Teens tend to stay up late and want to sleep late in the morning. This isn’t due to laziness or stubbornness. It is actually due to natural rhythms of the teen’s body. Body chemicals in teens work to make the teen naturally want to go to bed around midnight or later and wake up in the late morning. Early school start times conflict with these natural body rhythms. And pressures on a teen’s time after school keep him or her from going to bed early to compensate. The result is often a sleep-deprived teen.

Why Should I Be Concerned?

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that teens who don’t get enough sleep have trouble focusing in class and often have lower grades than they are capable of. The NIH has also found growing evidence linking a chronic lack of sleep in teens with an increased risk of being overweight, developing diabetes or heart disease, and getting infections. Teens who are sleep deprived may fall asleep in class or other inappropriate places. And for teens who are driving, being sleepy can raise the risk of a serious accident.

Signs That Your Teen Needs More Sleep

Is your teen sleep deprived? Watch for the following signs:

• Daytime sleepiness
• Trouble concentrating or remembering
• Irritability
• Need for caffeine or other stimulants to stay awake
• Need for naps after school
• Poor grades
• Trouble sleeping (problems falling asleep or staying asleep)

What You Can Do

Tips to help your child get more sleep and be more alert during the day:

• Limit caffeine intake. Don’t let your child have caffeine after lunchtime.

• Discourage doing anything in bed other than sleeping, such as reading, writing, eating, watching TV, talking on the phone, or playing videos or other games.

• Restrict TV and computer use (which can be stimulating) for at least an hour before bedtime. Instead, encourage reading, listening to quiet music, writing in a journal, or other calming activity during this time.

• Have your teen drink a warm, non-caffeinated beverage (such as milk) before bed.

• Make the bedroom conducive to sleep. Take the TV, computer, and phone out of the bedroom. Make sure the bedroom is cool and as dark and quiet as possible.

• Turn a bright light on in the child’s room in the morning. The bright light helps the body wake up and shuts down production of sleep hormones. Alarm clocks with a light feature are available on the Internet.

• Encourage your teen to get a full night’s sleep on a regular basis. Try to set a regular bedtime. Help your teen avoid staying up late to do homework or study. If extracurricular activities after school are too time-consuming, consider cutting back or prioritizing which activities to take part in.

• Have your teen get up at the same time every morning. Discourage sleeping in on weekends to “catch up on sleep.” This does more harm than good by throwing sleep rhythms off.

When to See the Doctor

The following can be signs of a more serious problem that can be treated. Let the child’s doctor know if your child:

• Falls asleep during the day

• Has leg twitching or moving when trying to fall asleep, or extremely restless sleep

• Sleepwalks

• Snores loudly

• Has insomnia (trouble falling asleep or staying asleep) often

In one of the best youth soccer games this author has seen, Eastside's Boys 15 Red, coached by Dan Strom, battled to a 4-3 victory over Crossfire in the US Youth Soccer Washington State Championship finals.  The game was characterized by excellent play on the part of both teams.  The score was tied 2-2 at the end of regulation play.  It went to 3-3 after two 15 minute periods of overtime.  The outcome was decided on the last penalty kick for a 4-3 victory.

Call for Volunteers

Master of Ceremony Tim Foster grapples with screeching feedback while volunteering at last year's Kickathon.

And now a word from the board....

Eastside FC has a busy schedule the next 6 months and we could use help from our membership. It could be a group of people from one team or individuals that would like to help. All efforts are needed and truly appreciated. Here are the opportunities that need your help:

• EFC Family Information Night the week of May 17th. This occurs after tryouts and is an evening for families and their player(s).

• Kick-a-thon 2010 a team of people to organize the club’s main fundraiser

• EFC Parent Night at Garage Billiards…an evening just for parents to meet each other, have some fun bowling, playing pool, shuffle board and view auction items. Bring your friends along too. This event needs a chair and team to start coordinating. The place is secured…Garage Billiards in Seattle.

• Community Service liaison to King County Parks. This individual would work with Laurie Clinton in organizing teams to weed the Preston Park area.

This is a great chance to meet people and get involved in a wonderful club that cares about the kids and their families. Please email me if you would like to help with any of the above events. My contact information is as follows:

wracine@centurytel.net cell phone 206-310-4473.

Thank you for stepping up and making our club the very best it can be!

See you at the fields,

Save Your Diadora Uniforms!

Left to right:  Anna DeWeirdt, Casey Kovarik, Maddie Christ . G94R.
"Play It Forward"
Photo:  Dan Kovarik

As you know, Eastside FC will be purchasing new adidas uniforms through Eurosport this year. Local program Play It Forward will be working with national program PassBack to collect and distribute our old uniforms to kids in need across the world.  Here are some details of the program, courtesy of the players in charge....

Who:  Casey Kovarik, Anna Deweirdt, and Maddie Christ, members of the EFC Girls '94 Red team, have taken the lead in collecting the club's old uniforms.

What:  Whether you want to donate your entire uniform set (jerseys, shorts, warm-ups, bags, etc.) or just a single piece, we’ll take it! Items will be collected on an individual basis — no need to coordinate with your team. We’ll also take gently used cleats, shin guards and balls.

When:  The collection will take place in early June, once Eastside FC teams have possession of their new uniforms.

Where:  We’ll collect at the Preston Fields during team practices.

Why:  It’s amazing the happiness, excitement and sense of team that a set of uniforms can bring to a group of young soccer players. The turnover of the entire club’s uniforms makes this a prime time to donate our old uniforms to a great cause.

What is Play It Forward?  A program started by Skyline High School students Emily Baer and Katie Ulrich, which collects soccer equipment and works with non-profit organizations to distribute it around the world. Since Emily and Katie will graduate this year, we, along with other players from Issaquah Soccer Club, will be assuming leadership of Play It Forward.

What is PassBack?  A U.S. Soccer Foundation organization committed to meeting the soccer uniform and equipment needs of all players in all communities. Powered by our friends at Eurosport, PassBack distributes new and gently used soccer gear, collected by organizations, teams, clubs and individuals, across the globe to underserved communities. For more information, visit

REMEMBER: Save your uniforms! More information will be communicated during the following months. We’ll be at tryouts to answer any questions. In the meantime, feel free to email us.

Thank you so much!
